Beyond Burnout

An integrative approach to stress, cortisol, and the HPA axis

8:00 – 9:00 AM ET BMS Resources storefront Free refreshments Virtual via Zoom available

Hosted by Dr. Eric Marsden, ND. From the biology of the stress response to practical, whole-person tools you can use Monday morning. Register below.

About this session

Chronic stress is one of the most common — and most under-assessed — drivers of disease in everyday practice.

This one-hour session translates the physiology of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis into clinically actionable insight: how the stress response shapes metabolic, cardiovascular, immune, cognitive, and longevity outcomes; a structured integrative approach to assessment using validated questionnaires, physical findings, and serum, urine, and salivary testing; and an evidence-informed toolkit spanning lifestyle, nutrition, mind-body practices, botanicals, traditional Chinese medicine, and clear criteria for pharmacologic and psychological referral. The emphasis throughout is practical integration into a busy clinical workflow.

Learning objectives

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the physiology of the acute and chronic stress response and the regulation of the HPA axis and cortisol.
  • Explain the impact of HPA-axis dysregulation on cardiometabolic, immune, cognitive, and longevity-related health outcomes.
  • Select and interpret appropriate assessment tools — validated questionnaires, physical examination findings, and serum, urinary, and salivary cortisol testing.
  • Apply an integrative, stepwise treatment framework spanning lifestyle, diet, mind-body, botanical, nutritional, and traditional Chinese medicine interventions.
  • Identify red flags and criteria for referral to pharmacologic management and psychological / psychotherapeutic care.

About the Ontario Naturopathic Integrative Network

Our partner — onin.ca

Year-round access to advanced integrative-medicine education

The Ontario Naturopathic Integrative Network (ONIN) is a community of naturopathic doctors and allied integrative practitioners working in evidence-informed, collaborative-care settings across Ontario. Through the ONIN portal, members access a large library of advanced integrative-medicine lectures, case discussions, and clinical practice resources — built and curated by clinicians who specialize in complex chronic disease, oncology adjunct care, hormonal health, gastrointestinal disorders, cardiometabolic medicine, and other domains where integrative approaches are most useful.

For CCNM interns, the ONIN portal is a low-friction bridge from training to practice. The library, case discussions, and clinician network give you a working preview of what integrative practice looks like once you're licensed — and a head-start on the relationships and reference points that will support your first years in clinic.

BMS Resources sponsors complimentary student membership for every CCNM intern. Sign-up open

Sign-up takes about a minute — you'll get immediate access to the ONIN portal library, the on-demand recording archive, and the wider clinical practice resources.
